Something You Got

[Chris Kenner]

Something You Got is a song written by New Orleans R&B singer and songwriter Chris Kenner who released it in 1961 as a single, with Come and See About Me on the B-side. Something You Got was also included on Kenner’s 1966 album Land of 1000 Dances.

Sandy Denny and Trevor Lucas share vocals on a very lack-lustre performance of Something You Got at a Fairport Convention gig on 26 January 1974 at Sydney Opera House, Australia. It was released in 1974 on Fairport’s album Live, and was included in 2010 on the 19 CD Sandy Denny Box Set. A later recording from April 1974 at Clark University, USA, with Sandy Denny and Jerry Donahue singing, is a bonus track of the 2002 CD reissue of The Airing Cupboard Tapes.

The Meters sang Something You Got in a Rock’n’Roll Medley recorded in between 1968 and mid-1970. It was included in 1990 on their Rounder / Special Delivery album Good Old Funky Music.

Lyrics

It’s something you got babe
Make me work all day
Something you got baby
Make me bring home all my pay
Something you got baby
You ought to know
My my, whoa whoa
I love you so

It’s something you got baby
It makes the world go round
It’s something you got baby
Gives you a happy home
It’s something you got baby
You ought to know, oh yeah
My my, whoa whoa
I love you so

Something you got baby
Make me work all day
Something you got baby
Make me bring home all my pay
Something you got baby
You ought to know, oh yeah
My my, whoa whoa
I love you so
