Next Time Around

[Sandy Denny]

Sandy Denny wrote Next Time Around about Jackson C. Frank, who used to be her boyfriend in 1967-68. There are three versions known:

  1. It originally appeared in 1971 on her first solo album, The North Star Grassman and the Ravens, and was later collected on the Who Knows Where the Time Goes? box set, on The Best of Sandy Denny, and on the 2CD anthology No More Sad Refrains. This is the first track on which Sandy is accompanied by an orchestra, which was arranged by Harry Robinson. The other musicians are Richard Thompson, acoustic guitar; Ian Whiteman, piano; Tony Reeves, bass and Gerry Conway, drums.
  2. A different take without the string arrangement was included in 2004 on the 5CD Fledg’ling Sandy Denny anthology A Boxful of Treasures and in 2005 as bonus track of the CD reissue of The North Star Grassman and the Ravens.
  3. A live version recorded at the Paris Theatre, London, on 16 March 1972 for BBC “Radio 1 in Concert” and broadcast on 25 March 1972 was released in 1997 on The BBC Sessions 1971-73 and in 2007 on the 3CD+DVD set Live at the BBC. During this performance, Sandy played the song on the piano, joking that “the band and orchestra are doing a gig elsewhere”.
