Carnival

[Sandy Denny]

When I wrote this song, and when I sing it now, it was and is a creation of imagery. Like when the summer is gone, and all the laughter and frivolities which go with the summer have mellowed; all at once the autumn is with us, albeit beautiful just the same.

A first demo of this song can be found on Together Again - The Attic Tracks Vol. 4. It shares some lyrics with the finished product on Like an Old Fashioned Waltz, but it’s quite different and is obviously influenced by Joni Mitchell’s Songs for a Seagull style. It was re-released on the 2CD anthology No More Sad Refrains.
