Biography

Alexandra Elene MacLean (’Sandy’) Denny, 6 April 1948 - 21 April 1978:

Considered by many to have been the finest female singer on the British folk and rock scene of the Sixties & Seventies, she began singing folk songs at the Kingston Barge at the age of 18 in the summer of 1966. In the relative incestuous folk world of London at that time, Sandy’s remarkable voice soon brought her to the attention of seasoned professionals. As early as November 1966 she was recording with the Johnny Silvo Folk Group for the BBC World Service and by the spring of 1967 she was recording material with Johnny Silvo and Alex Campbell, both experienced ’folkies’.

In 1967 Sandy teamed up with the then unknown group the Strawbs, and the one album that they recorded together features her first ever recording of an original song, and possibly her best known composition, Who Knows Where the Time Goes?.

In May 1968 Sandy auditioned as lead female singer (Ian Matthews shared lead vocals) for ‘England’s answer to Jefferson Airplane’, Fairport Convention. She replaced Judy Dyble, and according to Simon Nicol, "stood out like a clean glass in a sinkful of dirty dishes". By the time the album What We Did on Our Holidays was released Richard Thompson & Sandy had already shown themselves as being the two main writers in the group.

When re-assembling after fully recuperating from a serious road accident, Fairport decided to produce an album of ’trad’ material and some original compositions written in the tradition vein. The result was the historically important Liege and Lief.

Sources vary as to the reasons, but shortly after the recording of Liege and Lief, and even before its release, Sandy Denny left Fairport Convention. She was understandably concerned that what she had conceived of as a one-off project (the recording of an essentially traditional album) was being viewed as a long term direction by certain members of the band. She herself wished to continue writing her own material and to intergrate traditional songs within a broad-ranging repertoire. She was also scared of the impending success seemingly awaiting the band and feared that it might drive a wedge between her and longstanding boyfriend Trevor Lucas of Eclection. Whatever the reasons, in Novenber 1969 Sandy left Fairport.

Within 3 months Sandy and Trevor had formed the successful Fotheringay, but while recording their second album, increasing pressure brought to bear on Sandy (particularly from producer Joe Boyd) convinced her that she should go solo. 1972 proved to be a productive year and she releases what is probably her most successful solo album, Sandy.

But a lack of direction in her solo work helped to pursuede Sandy to rejoin Fairport, initially on a temporary basis for a tour in January ’74, and then on a permanent basis. But despite healthy promotion and extensive touring the album Rising for the Moon barely touched the charts and unfortunately was not another Liege and Lief. If the fear of commercial success had partially prompted Sandy’s first departure from Fairport, the reality of commercial failure induced her second parting.

After a year of rest sandy recorded her last solo album, but the contemporary music scene had passed Sandy by and the album went virtually unnoticed by public and press alike.

In 1978, as a result of falling down a flight of stairs, Sandy died from a cerebral haemorrhage. One can only speculate about what direction Sandy’s career might have taken had she lived, but maybe her popularity would have mirrored that of Richard Thompson, who experienced a decline through the late 70’s but gained a new audience in the 80’s. Although her tragic death has robbed us of her magnificent voice, the music she has left behind has lost none of its power to move the discerning listener.

Volume 1 of a series of 4 cassettes of Sandy Denny and Trevor
Lucas, issued and distributed by the Australian Friends of
Fairport. These are limited release - available only per mail
order and only from John Penhallow in Australia, somewhat
similar to the _Doom & Gloom_ tapes. The tapes were compiled
from assorted memorablia collected by Trevor Lucas and stored in
the attic of his house (hence the name) and they were issued to
help pay for the education of Sandy’s and Trevor’s kids. Volume
One was released by John and Trevor and contains a number of
odds and ends from all over Sandy’s career - some stunning
highlights and some novelty curiosities, running to a total of
100 minutes. Volume Two, released after Trevor’s death in 1989,
is a 74-minute live concert tape of a Lucas concert in 1984, but
             no Denny content.
Volume 3 in turn was all-Denny; subtitled "First and Last
Recordings", it contains on side A home demos and a couple of
early BBC live recordings from 66/67 and on side B the
soundboard tape of Sandy’s last ever concert in November ’77.
Volume 4 (probably the final volume) subtitled "Together Again",
features one side of Sandy and one side of Trevor recordings,
with Sandy’s side concentrating on alternative versions of songs
that appeared on _Like an Old-Fashioned Waltz_ (the Denny album
that was butchered by overdone string arrangements, as were
             parts of Rendezvous).

This is a compilation from all four cassette volumes and has a
very good track selection - while the tapes are occasionally a
bit patchy, the CD has the highlights and is stunning quality
throughout. They were also very careful in the mastering and the
sound quality of the CD is FAR superior to the tapes - partly
due to the fact that they didn’t include any of the tracks from
dodgy sources (like the early home demos or the "Pass of Arms"
soundtrack). Another difference is that this is a full
             commercial release.
SD plays piano on "Tears", and sings backing vocal with Linda
Thompson on "Girls on the Avenue". SD doesn’t play on the tracks
             in brackets.
             + - Last studio recording.
++ - Intended as single release in France.
+++ - Demo for _Rising for the Moon_.
++++ - Recorded in June ’76 during the _Rendezvous_ sessions.
             * - Basic track recorded in ’72 during _Northstar Grassman_
sessions. Brass added in ’76 during _Rendezvous_ sessions.
** - Home demo, recorded Byfield, Northamptonshire (1976/77).
*** - Recorded at Wapping Town Hall, East London.
**** - Recorded at Sandy’s last concert at the Royalty Theatre,
                    Kingsway, London, 27-Nov-77.
