Evening Love Song

[ Roud - ; Sam Richards]

Sam Richards printed his Evening Love Song in his and Tish Stubbs’ 1979 book The English Folksinger.

Steve Turner sang Evening Love Song in 2018 on his Tradition Bearers CD Late Cut. He noted:

Sam Richards and Tish Stubbs published a collection of songs called The English Folksinger in 1979. It contains this song, written by Sam in 1978. I took the liberty of messing about with the tune. The new one is based on an 18th century minuet called Carey’s Minuet, the manuscript of which was given to me by Gina le Faux. I was given Sam and Tish’s book as a present by the Goose is Out Folk Club in London last year, having failed to win it in their raffle. They told me that it had been unclaimed for several weeks, which mystified me as I found it quite a rich source of material.

Lyrics

Steve Turner sings Evening Love Song

The sun will shine in the midnight hour,
The stars on a summer’s day,
And the seven seas will burn before
My love will fade away. (×2)

Down by Cathedral Yard we met
Just as the evening fell.
Our day’s work done and the time our own
To weave our lovers’ spell. (×2)

The spires arise in the twilight skies
Tall and straight they stand.
But the love that rests deep in my breast
Is a thousand times as grand. (×2)

Arm in arm we crossed the green
Down to the river side.
It’s there we kissed and talked of love
Where the waters gently glide. (×2)

Come my love and lie with me,
The evening’s almost done.
We went to bed in the midnight hour
In the morning lay as one. (×2)

Now the birds begin to sing,
The morning’s coming on
And you and I must part until
Another day is done,
Till another day is done,
Till another day is done.
