Blow Your Trumpet, Gabriel

[ Roud 11860 ; Ballad Index AGW003 ; trad.]

This song was sung by Maddy Prior, accompanied only by Liam Genockey’s percussion, on Steeleye Span’s 2004 CD, Winter. She commented in the album’s sleeve notes:

Rick and I first learnt this from Alex Atterson, latterly of Norwich, and most recently sang it at my Mum, Edith’s, funeral. I’d like to dedicate it to both of them and other friends that have gone before.

Lyrics

Chorus (repeated after each verse):
Blow your trumpet, Gabriel
Blow louder, louder
And I hope that trumpet blows me home
To the New Jerusalem

Mary mild sits always
Singing praises every day
And I hope that trumpet blows me home
To the New Jerusalem

The angel came with glorious sound
Love incarnate was come down
And I hope that trumpet blows me home
To the New Jerusalem

Mary pondered in her heart
All the angle did impart
And I hope that trumpet blows me home
To the New Jerusalem
