Sail On

[Yonne Lyon, David Lyon]

Yvonne Lyon sang her and David Lyon’s song about trans-Atlantic migration, Sail On, with a chorus of Julie Lee, Eilidh Patterson, Elaine Lennon, Ali Wyness and John Wyness, on her 2020 album Growing Wild.

Steve Turner sang Sail On, with Moira Craig and Rob van Sante on chorus, in 2023 on his Tradition Bearers album Curious Times. He noted:

I hurried to get a copy of Yvonne Lyon’s album Growing Wild after hearing this great anthem to modern times on a sample CD issued by R&R Magazine in 2022.

Lyrics

Steve Turner sings Sail On

In the struggle of this moment
When everything has changed
Sail on, my love, sail on
To brave the deeper waters
With the courage that remains
Sail on, my love, sail on

Chorus:
My sister, my brother,
My daughter, my son,
My father, my mother,
Whatever may come
Sail on, my love, sail on

How endless is the ocean
When we feel we’ve lost our way
Sail on, my love, sail on
When the breath of purpose stolen
In the light of solace failed
Sail on, my love, sail on

A different shore is calling
With a welcome of the tide
Sail on, my love, sail on
Where the sky is full of promise
And the storm is far behind
Sail on, my love, sail on
